The Medical Management Prototype objective is to ensure that NATO has the ability to manage a large number of casualties that may occur on the battlefield during large scale warfighting intervention on the continental land mass of Europe.

The initial project started approximately 15 years ago and after several development iterations alas, no digitized solutions were produced. In 2021, partly in response to the changing strategic landscape and the move from an expeditionary warfighting footing to a large-scale warfighting footing across NATO, an innovative small-scale project was successfully run to deliver a minimal viable product (MVP) for the regulation and management of patients and medical assets on the battlefield. The MVP solution (V1.0) was successfully launched in May 2021 and was further developed and delivered in August 2023.

Key Features
1.Patient Tracking. The real time tracking of patients along their operational care pathway from point of injury to definitive care.


2.Patient Regulating. The efficient movement of all entitled injured patients (NATO troops, enemy combatants or entitled civilian casualties). This includes the use of medical transport assets (land sea and air) into the correct health care facility with the corresponding matching clinical capabilities, be that civilian or military around the NATO Health care network.


3.Medical Treatment Directory. A directory of health care facilities with the corresponding clinical capabilities and capacity.


4.Medical Reporting. To provide commanders, both medical commanders and operational commanders situational awareness of the available resources on the battlefield in order to support rapid and efficient decision making.


5.Interoperability. Interoperable with NATO national systems and civilian health care systems


It’s imperative to say that the MVP solution known as the Medical Management Prototype has some uncompleted development work to be done. However, it has been deployed on the NATO Secret Server for use by the NATO Operational Commands at the beginning of September 2023.


Furthermore, the solution is available for all NATO Command and NATO Force Structures to use now and available through dialogue to install onto national servers from the NCIA Software Catalogue. Partner nations may also request the use of this software through their national medical channels.
